"Dandruff" is a general term for dandruff on the scalp. However, not all dandruff is the same. The flakes on your scalp vary in severity.
On the one hand, there is the light, ordinary dandruff - here we are talking about loose flakes that you often find on your shoulders, especially after a long day. Dry dandruff is the most common type of dandruff. Many people are affected by it, especially in fall and winter. Increased stress can also lead to a flare-up of dandruff.
Mild to moderate dandruff can usually be treated with commercially available shampoos, tonics and scalp creams.
On the other hand, there are also severe forms of scalp dandruff - a distinction is made between psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis. Both diseases can not only disturb the visual appearance, but also lead to severely impaired scalp health and discomfort. In many cases, these types of dandruff need to be treated with stronger and prescription products. If your scalp is not cleared of its buildup, your problem can eventually lead to hair loss.
Your skin is shed and renewed approximately every two weeks. However, you don't usually notice this as the invisible and dead skin cells are washed off when you bathe or rubbed off your clothes.
However, the shedding of the scalp becomes noticeable as soon as the process gets out of control. A build-up of dead skin cells forms on your scalp. This is usually caused by an imbalance of bacteria on the scalp or if you don't wash your hair often enough!
You can imagine this as follows: Our skin is covered with millions of microorganisms - bacteria and germs - also known as "skin flora". Your skin secretions such as sweat and sebum normally form a protective layer that prevents bacteria from multiplying on the scalp. However, factors such as illness, stress, nutritional deficiencies or hormonal fluctuations can disrupt this barrier. Bacteria can then multiply, leading to excessive dandruff on the scalp.
If you suffer from mild to moderate dandruff, you should take a look at your diet and lifestyle. An unhealthy lifestyle can also lead to excessive dandruff. The condition of your scalp can often be improved by making simple changes.
For example, avoid dairy products for a few weeks, as these can aggravate dandruff and any eczema. Or reduce foods that are high in salt, saturated fatty acids, trans fatty acids or sugar.
Finally, try to make time for stress-relieving activities such as yoga, meditation, general relaxation and fitness. These can sometimes help to reduce the severity and frequency of stress- and hormone-related dandruff.
There are numerous products to combat dandruff. At the HAARKLINIK , we work on site with an intensive treatment program that is specifically adapted to your scalp problems. But there are also little helpers at home that can provide a healthier and more pleasant scalp base after just a few applications. The sensitive and deep cleansing Flaky-Itchy-Scalp line from Philip Kingsley brings your scalp back into balance and creates a healthy breeding ground for your hair. Please note that good and regular care is essential, especially for skin prone to dandruff. A common misconception is that dandruff is always caused by a dry scalp and needs to be supplied with more oil. However, dandruff usually occurs on oily scalps! So avoid rubbing in extra oil and regularly remove sebum and impurities from your scalp.
If your scalp balance changes significantly and you notice redness or discomfort on your scalp, especially in connection with hair loss, you should make an appointment with a trichologist as soon as possible. Most forms of dandruff and scalp disorders can be significantly improved or even eliminated within approx. 4 - 6 weeks with the right treatment methods.
