The days are getting shorter and the nights colder. Well, that's just what September brings. The summer vacations are slowly coming to an end and the pools are filling up one last time before the fall and winter season begins.
In our daily conversations with clients, whether during an analysis or a treatment, we have heard that very few of them are happy about the end of summer. Summer magically brings with it a lot of optimism and positivity, which seem to disappear in September. And suddenly we are annoyed by things in our everyday lives that we didn't even notice during the warmer months.
We also find a perfect example when it comes to hair. During September, people notice a sudden loss of hair. They talk about a kind of shedding. Perhaps this sounds familiar to you too or you have heard of it before.
But is there really anything to it? Really! Your hair is in the growth phase for up to 6 years, which actually means that it grows and grows and grows. After these years, it enters the resting phase and then the shedding phase. It remains in the shedding or telogen phase for a few months until it leaves your head.
In late summer and fall, there is an accumulation of these telogen hairs, resulting in increased hair loss. The reason for this accumulation is the intense sunlight in summer. To protect the scalp, more hair roots switch from the growth phase to the resting phase. Around 3-4 months later, in the fall, these hairs then fall out. The longer the hair and scalp are exposed to the sun in summer, the more hair will fall out in the fall. As hair growth follows certain cycles, there can also be an accumulation of telogen hairs in spring.
So your moult is not a mistake on your part. But what can you do about it? Or rather, how can you ensure that your hair stays long, beautiful and strong?
We've written down 5 tips on how to keep your hair in top condition and get through the shedding process without any problems.
1. more beautiful hair with the right diet
Hair cells are the second fastest multiplying cells in the body. This makes the nutritional needs of hair unique and demanding.
But what exactly should such a diet look like?
As hair is largely made up of proteins, protein is the main building block for hair growth. That's why you should make sure you eat as much protein as possible in your meals. This can improve not only the quality but also the strength of your hair. However, it is not only proteins that are important, but also complex carbohydrates. This is because they provide your body with the energy it needs to grow hair.
So try not to skip meals and make sure you're getting enough calories for your lifestyle. This means that if you exercise a lot or are pregnant, you should eat more and more often.
So... so much for food!
2. take nutritional supplements for support
Eating a healthy and balanced diet all the time can be quite difficult. Life sometimes just gets in the way and, especially in summer, we'd rather be out and about than at home. But busy schedules usually mean eating on the go often, which in turn leads to eliminating important food groups.
Even during stressful times, we tend to turn to comfort food - or worse still, skip our main meals altogether. Seasonal colds and flu can also reduce our ability to absorb all the nutrients our hair needs.
But don't worry! This doesn't have to mean the end of a beautiful mane! Because food supplements are your perfect companion in precisely such cases.
Taking a dietary supplement that specifically targets the hair can be extremely beneficial.
Protein supplements such as our Amino Essentials can help with the strength and quality of hair. But also a vitamin mix, such as our Hair Vitamin Complex, can increase the levels of iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and biotin, which is essential for optimizing hair length and volume.
3. find a balance in your physical and mental health
Life is all about balance. It is important to get enough exercise, but relaxation should not be neglected either. Social life leads us to have a more fulfilling life, but it is also important to have time alone and find yourself again. Just as it is important to eat healthily, but still indulge in something sweet from time to time.
We can list countless more examples of balance, but we assume you know what we're getting at. Stress in general can have a negative impact on hair growth and health. But sometimes it's not possible to completely turn your back on stress overnight.
We recommend that you take small, simple steps to reduce your stress levels and thus promote your mental and physical well-being. Take time to do something good for yourself again, such as exercising, relaxing or reading - whatever is good for you! The main thing is not to lose your everyday balance.
4. choose the right hair care products
Are you not happy with the way your hair feels, behaves or looks in general? Then the culprit can often be your shampoo or conditioner. You'd be surprised how often we come across this problem during consultations with customers. Because with the large selection of shampoos available in retail stores or at the hairdresser, it's easy to choose the wrong one. If you want to buy a new hair product, it's important that you first choose products that suit your hair texture and importantly: not your hair condition!
However, it is important to understand that a shampoo or conditioner will not make your hair grow. They can only protect your hair from breakage, which means that your hair can grow in length. However, if you want to stimulate your hair growth, stimulating scalp masks or scalp tonics are an advantage.
If you have more questions about the right products, we will be happy to help you with a free analysis consultation.
5. book a consultation appointment with a trichologist
