Does hair grow faster if you cut it often? Do hair ties increase hair loss? There are many rumors about hair loss. Which of them are true? Our trichologists explain.
Hair ties are said to be bad for your hair and even contribute to hair loss. But is this myth really true? "Yes and no": "It depends on the hair quality and the hair tie." For this reason, it is better to use hair ties sparingly. Hair should also never be tied up too tightly. The Haarklinik recommends always using scrunchies.
This myth sounds almost too good to be true. You can use as many professional products against split ends as you like, but once the ends of your hair have split, you can't repair them. "Only a good haircut will help". However, if you still want to try a product, we recommend a special split end treatment: The Bond Builder Split End Remedy from PHILIP KINGSLEY specifically cares for the ends of your hair. Declare war on annoying split ends! The treatment has a repairing and strengthening effect on the damaged hair structure and also protects against UV and heat damage.
After shampooing, you want to comb your mane thoroughly. No wonder, the hair usually gets quite knotty from all the massaging and rubbing. However, wet hair is particularly sensitive and can quickly be damaged by combing. "It's best to dry your hair a little before combing it through. This makes it more elastic," our trichologists advise. However, you shouldn't wait until they are completely dry either, as the hair can be pulled out if there are small knots.
We admit... a hot shower can be very pleasant for the scalp. Unfortunately, this feeling is the only benefit. Because heat is generally not healthy for the hair and scalp. The hot water opens up the cuticle and actually dries out the hair. Our advice: wash your mane with lukewarm water.
There is a trend circulating on the internet that says hair is dried more gently with a T-shirt. The idea is to wrap your hair in a large T-shirt and let it air dry. But is this myth really true? The professional answer is "No!": "It's not better with a T-shirt, but the finer structure of the cotton means the water comes out of the hair faster."
Sometimes it can't go fast enough after a shower. You want your hair to dry quickly and sit perfectly. But the heat damages the hair in the long term. That's why this myth is also true, as we can confirm: "Air drying is definitely gentler on the hair."
But before you panic - first ask yourself: How much hair loss is normal?
Normally, 70 to 100 hairs fall out every day. With an average of 100,000 hairs on a person's head, this is not very noticeable. Each individual hair is constantly renewed and goes through a cycle of three phases: The growth phase lasts around two to six years, followed by a transition phase of around two weeks, during which the cells stop dividing, and then a resting phase lasting two to four months. After this, the hair falls out and new hair grows. Only when more than 100 hairs per day fall out over a longer period of time do doctors speak of hair loss. This is usually genetic. Male pattern baldness is not usually a disease either, but is due to a hereditary predisposition. Hair loss is one of the most common symptoms, and the causes are as varied as the ways of combating the symptoms.
